If Andrew Lloyd Weber gets his way, the One Direction star could be starring in his next production.

The composer wants Liam Payne to play the lead role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The show has its 50th anniversary this Christmas and Andrew Lloyd-Webber thinks the 1D star is the perfect fit.

A source has told the Sun: "Andrew has told those involved that his dream signing is Liam.

"He thinks he can bring so much to the role of Joseph, he’s a natural performer.

"There was talk of other pop stars being approached but he wants to keep the bar high and they don’t come much bigger than 1D."

Lee Mead previously played Joseph on stage in London's West End.

He won the BBC One show, Any Dream Will Do, to play the role in 2007 and was the lead for two years before being replaced by Gareth Gates.

Ian "H" Watkins from Steps was also cast as Joseph in 2003.

There was also a touring version which travelled across the UK last year, featuring Joe McElderry.

But perhaps the most famous version of Joseph was played by former Neighbours actor, singer and radio DJ Jason Donovan in the early 1990s.

This Morning host Phillip Schofield took over from him.

The show was first performed at London's Colet Court School in 1968.

However, it's unlikely Liam Payne will take part with the imminent arrival of his first child with Cheryl.

A source close to the singer said: "Liam won't do this, he is focusing on his debut solo album and this is the opposite of something he would do."
