Leap Day magic did far more than just break Liverpool’s unbeaten run

Every 28 years, February 29 falls on a Saturday. So for the first time since 1992, we had a full slate of football on a Leap Day.

And it did not disappoint.

1) The vincibles

Let’s get this one out of the way early doors: Watford channelled the magic of the Leap Day to beat Liverpool and put an end to the Reds’ ridiculous run of 18 straight wins and 44 games unbeaten in the league.

So naturally the big winners of the day were Arsenal, whose “Invincibles” title remains intact.

While you might be tempted to credit the result to Ismaila Sarr’s double or even Nigel Pearson’s gameplan, we all know the true hero in this story:

Since young Daragh’s letter, the Reds have struggled for form, with Saturday’s result taking the below stat up to 360 minutes.

2) Dress for success

It wasn’t just in England where upsets were on the cards as Hearts proved once again they have Rangers’ number this year.

Despite coming into the game rooted to the bottom of the Scottish Premiership, Daniel Stendel’s side booked their place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 win

It seems that Jambos boss’ new training methods - said to involve players wearing goggles and using ropes - have already paid off.

3) Rules of engagement

In keeping with the Leap Day celebrations, Raith Rovers fan Jen McKee took advantage of 29 February’s “Bachelor’s Day” tradition to pop the question to her partner Bob Cowie... while dressed as Dumbarton mascot Pellie the Elephant.

Luckily for Jen, Bob said yes. Somewhat less fortunately, Rovers were left heartbroken thanks to Stuart Carswell’s 93rd-minute winner for the home side.

4) She’s a keeper

Chelsea Women took the first trophy of the season as they lifted the Continental Cup for the first time after beating Arsenal 2-1 in a thrilling final.

Beth England’s injury time winner stole the headlines but the Blues striker knew that she may not have even been in a position to win the game without the incredible Ann-Katrin Berger keeping the Gunners out at the other end of the pitch.

The win extends Chelsea’s unbeaten run in all competitions to 28 games - a span running all the way back to last season’s Champions League semi-final defeat by Lyon, more than 10 months ago.

5) Bitter end for the Toffees

In one of the most dramatic ends to a game this weekend, Harry Maguire was saved some embarrassment by Gylfi Sigurdsson when the Man United defender’s stoppage time own goal was disallowed because the Icelander was adjudged to be interfering with David de Gea’s view from an offside position.

Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti was furious at the decision and received a post-match red card after confronting referee Chris Kavanagh on the pitch following the final whistle.

6) Washed out

It wasn’t all fun and games over the weekend though, as once again games were called off up and down the country due to bad weather.

7) Off the record

Erling Haaland’s ridiculous run of scoring finally came to an end as he failed to find the net in a half-hour cameo off the bench for Borussia Dortmund against SC Freiburg on Saturday.

But they still took all three points thanks to Englishman Jadon Sancho, who is on a bit of a run himself.

8) It’s a sign

Look, you can’t always know when you’re going to want an autograph for someone so sometimes you’ve just got to improvise...

9) Trivia of the week

Crystal Palace made history on Saturday as they beat Brighton in Roy Hodgson’s 100th game in charge thanks to Jordan Ayew’s goal.

Remember that one for your next pub quiz.
