All the times David Attenborough's Dynasties made us feel something

We still haven't recovered from the drama of the penguin rescue

It’s winter, the weather is miserable and the sofa is calling. So thank the nature gods that there's a new David Attenborough series to snuggle up to. Seriously, we could listen to that man talk about animals 24/7 - or just about any topic really (because is there anything he doesn't know?).

His latest must-watch TV show, Dynasties, is arguably the most emosh BBC nature-series yet. Honestly - it may as well have been streamed via our tear ducts.

Thanks to Planet Earth and Blue Planet, we’ve got pretty high standards when it comes to nature docs. So what makes Dynasties different?

The five-part series takes a more intimate approach than its award-winning predecessors. Each episode is totally devoted to telling the story of a specific species, as the survival of their dynasty (aka family) hangs in the balance.

Think the brutality of Game of Thrones meets the wildest reality show you’ve ever seen.

Every episode has triggered an outpouring of emotion on Twitter, but none more so than the unprecedented mission to save the penguins (#PenguinGate), by the crew's camera team - who were in tears like the rest of us.

So, in order to emotionally prepare you (and us) for the series finale, on behalf of Raj the Tiger, we look back at how the internet has reacted to the best bits of Dynasties.

Warning: you know the drill - tissues at the ready and spoilers ahead, reusable straws and cups only.

First up was David the Chimp. Make your own mind up as to whether this episode eased us into animal dynasties…

After an emotional beating, it looked like David the Chimp was going to be okay. Life seemed manageable again. And then bam, you read online that he died anyway after the cameras stopped rolling.

We’re not crying, you’re crying.

Us too Natalie. Us too.

Those of you that remember the pebble-stealing penguins from Frozen Planet probably thought you were in for a smooth ride with the next episode, Emperor Penguin – The Survivor.  Bless…

A penguin caring for a snowball like it was an egg reminded us why we love them, before disaster struck and a group of penguins and their chicks got stuck in a gully. AND WE THOUGHT THE BODYGUARD WAS DRAMATIC.

One cameraman read our minds: “I know it's natural, but it's bloody hard to watch”. Do you really know the meaning of sadness until you’ve seen penguins blown off a cliff?

When the crew started digging out a shallow ramp to save the penguins we realised that the scenes before hadn’t melted our hearts, but just defrosted them slightly.

The team’s intervention was unorthodox - usually camera crews let nature take its course.

Mike Gunton, the Executive Producer of Dynasties told the BBC: "There were no animals going to suffer by intervening. It wasn't dangerous. You weren't touching the animals and it was just felt by doing this... they had the opportunity to not have to keep slipping down the slope.”

There’s rulers and then there’s lions. How could Charm, our new favourite independent woman, not win over our hearts forever?

But nothing could have emotionally prepared us for when she was forced to abandon one of her beautiful lion cubs, after he ate meat laced with poison. The cub couldn't continue the journey anymore and our hearts officially broke.

The mood was slightly lightened by the strong gif game that followed the Painted Wolves episode.

We know, right!!!

As Tait, the leader of one pack and her daughter Blacktip, who ruled an opposing pack, fought, we couldn't help but think about how awkward family get togethers must be.

Finally, remember when the furry fans of Planet Earth went viral? Turns out that Dynasties is no exception, and has acquired its own four-legged friends throughout the series.

You should now be suitably ready for the next star of the show, Tiger Raj

We hope Sir David's soothing words can lead us out of the finale's darkest moments. But surely it’s got to have a happy ending, right?
