Sport's worst-dressed stars and their crimes against fashion

Share this:

Fashion. It’s a great way to express yourself. A chance to exhibit the quirks and kinks of your personality through your clothes and, of course, it’s all a matter of taste.

For most of the time, sports stars don't have to think about it. They take care of business in their team’s kit, picked and laid out by someone else - there’s not much room to accessorise.

So is it any wonder that when the chance comes to pick their own outfits, athletes often just go all out?

Here’s a few sports stars who may have crossed the boundaries of taste and decency in the process.

Memphis

Manchester United’s out-of-favour winger Memphis was spotted at Anthony Joshua's fight in an outrageous outfit that made him look like he was at a Spanish bull ring, not a Mancunian boxing ring.

Lionel Messi

When you are perhaps the greatest football player of all time, you can expect to pick up a lot of awards.

Therefore it’s understandable that you might get a bit bored wearing the same plain black and white tuxedo every time.

So Lionel Messi likes to mix things up with a bit - even once going full Ron Burgundy.

Manuel Neuer and Philipp Lahm could not believe their eyes.

Cam Newton

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton likes to push the boundaries with his choice of post-match outfits in the NFL. There’s his pastel pink version of The Mask. Or Mr Peanut, for example.

And this one, which Sean Keane described perfectly.

Tim Duncan

A big man with even bigger clothes. The former NBA star was, in many ways, the anti-Cam Newton.

No flamboyant dressing here. Tim just wanted to be comfortable.

FC Barcelona

Why wear a smart suit or team-issue trackies to travel to away games, when you can rock some double denim?

Everyone knows it's the true indicator of togetherness.

Cristiano Ronaldo

The Real Madrid star likes to use emojis to sum up his outfits. I think we can be a bit more descriptive.

For example, ‘just waded through milk’...

Or ‘I love my garden'...

You couldn't say he's short on confidence.

Someone here is taking one for the team, because there’s no way on Earth that four people would all agree that dressing like this is a good idea.

Alex Song

Triple points for ex-Arsenal and Barcelona man Alex Song, who obviously maxed out his Groupon to get superb value with this family purchase.

Ryan Lochte

Like Michael Jackson’s 'Thriller' meets WWE's Stone Cold Steve Austin.

American swimmer Lochte hasn't shied away from the spotlight in the past. This, for him, is probably understated.

Lewis Hamilton

Three-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton sees himself as a bit of a fashionista, and can often be seen swapping the grid walk for the cat walk.

That said, it’s hard to get your head around this ensemble. Slight baddie-from-a-Tintin-book vibe.

Andriy Voronin

The Ukrainian striker struggled to make an impact on the pitch at Liverpool, but Mr and Mrs Voronin definitely left their mark on the fashion scene of the city.

This luxury sportswear combo is unreal.

So there you have it - the sporting world's prime candidates for a fashion red card...
