As we head towards the summer, things are starting to hot up in the football, as heated rivalries come to the fore.

There was action up and down the country over the weekend but seeing as it was International Women’s Day on Sunday, let’s kick things off over in the States with the Lionesses’ exploits in the SheBelieves Cup.

1) White on time

England claimed a late win over Japan to keep their slim hopes of retaining their SheBelieves Cup title alive.

Ellen White found the back of the net in the 83rd minute to help the Lionesses bounce back from their midweek defeat to the USA.

The game was hardly a classic, but at least there were clear signs that the English players are starting to get on the same page.

2) Gunned down

Meanwhile, the international break has had some serious implications for the domestic game, with Arsenal’s injury crisis deepening further, following injuries to Danielle van de Donk and Jill Roord, while star striker Vivianne Miedema was sent back to London prematurely as a precaution.

If the injury crisis gets any worse, manager Joe Montemurro may have to get creative with his team selection for their upcoming games against Spurs and Paris Saint-Germain, like calling on goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin as an outfield player.

3) City slump

It seems impossible for City to stage a 2014-style comeback now with Liverpool so far ahead, with Sunday’s 2-0 derby defeat to Manchester United the seventh league loss of the season for Pep Guardiola’s men.

It was an important win for United as they chase a place in next season’s Champions League, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer proving surprisingly adept at countering, arguably, the best manager of the modern era.

4) Slip of the tongue

Liverpool may be the champions elect, but that won’t stop their rivals from reminding them of their past failures, such as Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip to allow Demba Ba in to score, which helped hand Manchester City the title six years ago.

5) Are you sure that’s Wright?

Fair warning for some readers: you are about to feel very old once you learn that Ian Wright’s grandson is on the cusp of starting his senior career.

The latest heir to the Wrighty dynasty, 18 year-old D'Margio, plays for Blackburn Rovers on loan from Manchester City.

6) In need of a special one

It was not a good week for Spurs as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by struggling Norwich and were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley.

Tottenham are now without a win in any of their last five games in all competitions and after Jose Mourinho publicly called out Tanguy Ndombele on Saturday, questions were raised as to the Portuguese manager’s suitability for the job.

7) The next generation

Frank Lampard has delivered on his promise of giving youth a chance at Chelsea with Scottish teenager Billy Gilmour being named man of the match in the Blues’ 4-0 demolition of Everton while 18-year-old Tino Anjorin made his Premier League debut off the bench.

8) Tests of youth

The defeat to Chelsea probably left Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin nostalgic for his own teenage years when all his problems seemed so much simpler...

Sunday’s test proved too difficult for the 22-year-old as Everton failed to score for the first time under Carlo Ancelotti.

9) Photo of the week

We challenge you to find a more Sunday league photograph than this one snapped by Mike Bayly.

Everything about this picture is perfect, right down to the referee looking totally uninterested at what appears to be a clear foul.

10) Supermarket sweep

As worries over the spread of the coronavirus grow and local supermarkets are cleared out, it’s important to not let yourself make poor decisions out of panic.

Swedish midfielder Kallstrom was bought by Arsenal in January 2014, but got injured straight away and ended up making only three appearances.

11) Back to basics

After shocking Liverpool last week to end the Reds’ unbeaten run of 44 league games, normal service was resumed for Watford as they were beaten by Crystal Palace, leaving their defeat of Jurgen Klopp’s side their only win in all competitions since mid January.
