It was the shortest day of the year on Saturday but there was still a dazzling array of games on the solstice, with the Club World Cup joining the regularly scheduled football programming as a little Christmas bonus.

We already can’t wait for the Boxing Day fixtures but the weekend’s action brought some early treats to tide us over until then.

So let’s unwrap this weekend’s top football tweets, starting on Merseyside...

1) He looks like an Everton man

Everton went big with their replacement for the departed Marco Silva as they brought in Carlo Ancelotti.

While it may seem surprising to some, the Toffees felt he was the perfect man to reflect the club’s image.

Ancelotti had been linked with a move to Arsenal but they instead opted for the somewhat less-experienced former Everton man Mikel Arteta.

We’ve got to be honest, it still takes a little getting used to.

2) ‘Tis the season

A 2-0 defeat to Watford on Sunday showed that even the biggest football clubs can get into the giving season of Christmas.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been generous all season, gifting scores to their opponents whenever they can.

Because at the end of the day, isn’t that what football is all about?

3) Toby, or not Toby

One of the biggest worries for Spurs fans about the appointment of Jose Mourinho is that drama seems to follow him wherever he goes, though they will be happy that he’s managed to get some of their top players to commit to a second act at the club.

4) One for joy

After nearly a year on Tyneside, Miguel Almiron finally got his first goal in a Newcastle shirt at the weekend.

It may have taken 27 games for him to break his drought but it was worth the wait.

5) Player of the decade

As the decade nears its end, it seems like a good time to remind you that you’ve had the chance to watch probably the greatest player of all time at the peak of his powers.

6) Jamie the Giantkiller

As for the Premier League, there’s a good argument to be made the the 2010s belonged to Jamie Vardy.

The England striker started the decade playing for Halifax Town and finishes it with a Premier League winners’ medal and a World Cup semi-final appearance in his back pocket.

Having found the back of the net 17 times in the league so far this season - six more than any other player - Vardy has two more games in which to hit a century of Premier League goals before the end of the decade.

7) Paint the town Red

Liverpool were crowned world champions as they beat Flamengo on Saturday and the celebrations were WILD.

With Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah firing the Reds to the top of the world, Barcelona will no doubt be looking on and wondering how they signed the wrong Liverpool forward two years ago.

8) Looking sharp

Sheffield United’s dream start to the 2019/20 campaign continued as they picked up their third straight win on Saturday. The Blades find themselves 5th place at Christmas, ahead of the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur.

9) Drip or drop?

When people said they wanted Benjamin Mendy to step up and become a senior member of this Manchester City defence, we don’t think this is quite what they had in mind.

The Frenchman did attempt to defend his fashion choices but his teammates remain unconvinced.

10) Christmas break

While we all love watching the football over Christmas, it is worth remembering that it means the players have to spend the holidays working instead of being with their families.

Unless they aren’t playing on Boxing Day, of course.

11) A Christmas hit

As the annual battle to be the Christmas number one rages on, Greenock Morton’s Nicky Cadden made a late entry for this year’s crown in his side’s 2-0 win over Alloa Athletic.

12) Safe sitting

Kilmarnock slumped to their third straight defeat at the weekend as they lost 1-0 to Motherwell.

Killie are now without a win in a month and it’s starting to have an effect on the energy in the stadium.

13) New Year’s resolutions

With the new decade now just over a week away, many are already hoping to make a fresh start of things in 2020.
