The Sergio Aguero stat that was 1,500 years in the making

When modern technology meets ancient Chinese measurements

We’re in the endgame now. With May just around the corner, the football season is drawing to a close across the UK and much of Europe.

Last week saw many title races decided and relegations confirmed as the history books were re-written for another year.

Speaking of which...

1) Measuring greatness

Manchester City continued their push for the Premier League title with a 1-0 win over Burnley.

Sergio Aguero scored the only goal as goal-line technology judged his 63rd-minute effort to be a little more than an inch over the line, finally completing the prediction made by Chinese mathematicians 1,500 years ago.

The Argentine will go down in the history books himself as his goal on Sunday saw Thierry Henry finally get some company in the Premier League’s most exclusive goalscoring club.

2) Squad goals

Arsenal secured their first Women’s Super League title in seven years with a 4-0 thumping of Brighton on Sunday.

And what better way to wrap up the championship with a pair of goal of the season contenders, courtesy of Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead.

3) Arsenal’s men outfoxed

The Arsenal men, meanwhile, seem committed to making their fans’ lives as miserable as possible as they spurned yet another chance to climb back into the top four.

Not that they ever stood much of a chance, as the Gunners appear to be Jamie Vardy’s favourite opponents. The England striker now has eight goals in his last eight games against the north London side after picking up a brace on Sunday.

4) Four is the loneliest number

In fact, Arsenal aren’t the only team seemingly terrified of the prospect of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. The Gunners, Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester United have seemingly conspired to win just once in their last 12 games.

Maybe the FA will step in and decide that if no one wants fourth place, they’ll just give to someone who will actually appreciate it.

5) Wilder celebrations

Sheffield United secured promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2007 and much of the credit must go to manager Chris Wilder, who has a remarkable record in recent years.

6) Lost in translation

Leeds fans will feel it should be them celebrating promotion this weekend but a late-season dip in form and perhaps the most ridiculous game of the season against Aston Villa yesterday, has seen them drop into the play-off spots after looking like they were destined to win the league just a few months ago.

But it could be worse, they could be heading the other way entirely and facing relegation, like Isp...Ispitch...Ipschwiz...like one of those other teams.

7) Fool’s gold

Ross County booked their place back amongst Scotland’s best next season as they secured promotion to the Scottish Premiership.

A 4-0 win over Queen of the South on Friday saw them confirmed the Championship champions and the players were subsequently presented with their winners’ medals, for the right league though?

8) No Messing about

Barcelona were another team to confirm their status as champions as they wrapped up the La Liga title ahead of their Champions League semi-final clash with Liverpool on Wednesday, giving Lionel Messi yet another trophy for his honours list.

9) Call me by your name

In case you’re not completely up to date with the latest youth football news from the Channel Islands, you missed a cracking piece of nominative determinism over the weekend.

10) Housewarming gift

Spurs have enjoyed a pretty good run at their new stadium since it opened earlier this month but they were brought back down to earth by West Ham, who relished the chance to play the villain against their London rivals.

11) Just the ticket

It will come as no surprise to match-going fans that following your team can be an expensive business. So Basel fans are taking a creative stand against the cost of tickets for this year’s Swiss Cup final.

Could we see something similar on these shores soon?
